BAFTA Games Awards 2018

BAFTA Games Awards is an annual British awards ceremony honoring “outstanding creative achievement” in the video game industry. BAFTA Games Awards 2018 returns in April 2018 for the 14th time to recognise the video game industry’s best creations of the past year.

Horizon Zero Dawn, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Fortnite all feature prominently in the BAFTA Games Awards 2018 nominations, while the controversial Star Wars: Battlefront II scored just one nomination, in the Audio Achievement category.

As well as being live-streamed for the first time, the BAFTA Games Awards will also feature a new category in 2018: Game Beyond Entertainment, which will recognise games that ‘deliver a transformational experience beyond pure entertainment.

The BAFTA Games Awards is part of the BAFTA institution and was set up in 2004. It was preceded by the BAFTA Interactive Entertainment Awards held from 1998 to 2003.

The awards are considered the most prestigious awards in the UK video game industry.

The 2018 BAFTA Games Awards will be held on Thursday, April 12 at the Troxy in London.

Who is hosting BAFTA Games Awards 2018?

Dara O’Briain is coming back to host the 2018 BAFTA Games Awards show. It will be the Irish comedian’s eighth time presenting the awards.Returning to host the British Academy Games Awards fills me with both excitement and trepidation. It’s a chance to celebrate the brilliant achievements of an incredible, creative industry, O’Briain said.

Cambridge developer Ninja Theory picked up five awards for its Nordic adventure Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. The game, which melds dark fantasy with an exploration of the psychosis of lead character Senua, won awards for British Game, Best Performer for Melina Juergens, Audio Achievement, Artistic Achievement and the inaugural Game Beyond Entertainment award. Hellblade was the most nominated game at this year’s BAFTAs, with nine nods in total.

Nintendo also won three awards, Super Mario Odyssey won Game Design and Family Game, while The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, widely tipped for the best game gong, was awarded for Game Innovation.

At the end of the evening, adventure game supremo Tim Schafer was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship for his long-standing contribution to the industry.
